Picturecraft Gallery Limited
The Picturecraft Gallery opened in 1972 and is now firmly established as one of East Anglia's leading art venues. Membership with the East of England Tourist Board promotes the gallery as Holt's only recognised tourist attraction, encouraging artists and customers to visit from all over the world. Situated just a stone's throw from the historic Georgian town centre the gallery is quite difficult to find yet, despite being tucked away, Lees Yard has rightfully earned a reputation for being, "the place to visit in Holt".
An eclectic mix of business ventures are now firmly established within Lees Yard, the latest addition being the expansion of Decorum menswear at Lyles Court. The fascinating workshop and studio of Lapwing Woodturning, where vistors can enjoy watching craftsman Tom Kittle at his lathe, lies immediately adjacent to the Picturecraft Gallery. The specialist services of Michael I’Anson and his expert ‘Healthier Horizons’ team can be found at Creative Chiropractic which is based at 5 Lyles Court and the Red Dot Gallery is located nearby at 2 Lyles Court.
Promotion of the gallery has interlinked with many advertising campaigns generated by these businesses in Lees Yard and the results have seen a significant daily increase in the number of new visitors discovering the gallery. Recent improvements to the central courtyard incorporating new brickweave paved areas now makes it much easier for disabled visitors to access all the shops and business services and an exterior facelift to the gallery has just taken place with vastly improved signage.
The last twelve months has seen the gallery going from strength to strength. Significantly benefitting from national and international media interest due to its close business association with 8-year old child artist Kieron Williamson, the gallery has further progressed with the formation of Picturecraft Publishing Limited. An extensive refurbishment programme took place in January 2011 further enhancing the ingenious, award winning system of display to incorporate a designated area devoted to the work of listed East Anglian Artists.
Major one-man exhibitions continually attracted a wide and appreciative audience and the impressive size of the gallery has proved a most fitting venue to showcase paintings by leading professional artists. In 2010, two independent one-man exhibitions were incorporated with highly successful Halsgrove book launches; 'Enchanted Landscapes' for Tony Garner and 'Painting Atmospheric Landscapes' for Brian Ryder. Another joint Halsgrove/Picturecraft initiative saw the publication of a 'Norfolk Address Book' which incorporated prints of paintings undertaken by exhibitors who regularly feature at the gallery. Further titles have been agreed for Adrian Hill to continue writing on the life and painting careers of artists who have an association with Picturecraft, and these will be published and released by Halsgrove during 2011.
A particularly interesting event has been arranged to take place at Picturecraft in March 2011 .... a 'Master Class' in connection with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters where three current members of the ROI will be demonstrating the technique of oil painting throughout the course of the day. This event will provide a wonderful opportunity to observe and be inspired by some of the UK's most respected painters .... a considerable coup for the gallery.
2011 also records the 20th anniversary since the Picturecraft Gallery won the NatWest Bank Business Award in recognition of its rental display system. The gallery was awarded the highly prestigious GOLD AWARD for MERCHANDISING, which, without question, proved to be a turning point in the history of the business and laid firm foundations for its continual success.
Picturecraft Gallery Limited is now owned and managed by Adrian Hill, who gained considerable business management skills and retail experience through working for Marks & Spencer, Jarrold of Norwich and Boots the Chemists. Adrian continues the tradition and challenge of running a unique gallery business which was established by his parents and late grandparents.
